J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Rendered with light and nimble handling, these sketches were taken as Turner navigated the Moselle from Kobern towards the villages of Dieblich (inscribed ‘Divelich’) and Winningen. In the upper, second and central sketches the Niederberg and bell tower at Kobern can be seen on the right, with Dieblich at left, each view successively becoming more distant as Turner moved downstream. The penultimate and rear drawings look towards Winningen, which is explored in the following folios (Tate D19816–D19817; Turner Bequest CCXVI 133–133a). Turner also makes note of a ferry service running at Winningen; though his inscription is minuscule and somewhat illegible, he appears to have written: ‘Ferry[ing] over a [?Cow or load] with [...]’.
