These drawings appear to have been taken on the quayside at Dieppe (see also Tate D19959, D19966, D19968–D19996, D19998–D20014; Turner Bequest CCXVI 205, 209a, 211–227, 228–236). The bridge shown here is depicted again in the following sketches of Dieppe: Tate D19987, D20003, D20209, D24524; Turner Bequest CCXVI 222a, 230a, CCXX C, CCLVIII 13 and in the oil painting Dieppe: The Port from the Quai Henry IV of around 1827–8 (Tate N03385). There is an inscription at top right, orientated inversely relative to the drawing, which reads ‘R[...] Colour Cuff’. This annotation is adjacent to a tiny jotting of a soldier’s head and torso, and presumably describes an aspect of his uniform.
