Finberg bracketed this page, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, with folio 42 recto opposite (D22402) but it is unclear whether the view is quite continuous. Here Dudley Castle’s ruined barbican gateway is seen to the north-west with the towers of the keep beyond. Whether continuous or not, what seems to be the outer face of the north end of the Sharington Range on the east side of Dudley Castle, which is now overgrown and screened by trees at this point, is shown on the opposite page. There is a head-on view of the barbican in the contemporary Kenilworth sketchbook (Tate D22110; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 69a).
For other views of Dudley, see under folio 39 recto (D22395).
Technical notes:
The recto and verso (D22404) of this leaf are affected by the extensive pale brown, mottled staining which extends throughout the previous gathering (folios 31–42; D22379–D22402) and also folio 30 (D22377, D22378), as discussed in the Technical notes to the sketchbook’s introduction.
