Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this slight sketch shows the ruins of Dudley Priory and nearby Priory Hall from Wren’s Nest Hill, looking south-east towards the centre of Dudley with the castle out of sight on the left. There are similar prospects which include the castle on the verso (D22086) and folio 60 recto (D22087; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 58). Compare the sequence in the contemporary Birmingham and Coventry sketchbook (Tate D22416–D22425; Turner Bequest CCXL 49a–54 recto).
For other views of Dudley see under folio 23 recto (D22016).
