As part of unpublished Turner research informed by local knowledge, Dr Bernard Richards has confirmed this subject as the spire of St Thomas’s Church, Dudley,1 in both the skyline view above and the isolated study below. As with the related view on folio 44 verso (D22406), the viewpoint may be in the vicinity of the road towards Brierley Hill, looking north-east along the High Street up the hill from Queen’s Cross, although there is little in the foreground of the upper sketch to assist in orientation, and the area has seen much subsequent development.
For other views of Dudley, see under folio 39 recto (D22395).
