As part of unpublished Turner research informed by local knowledge, Dr Bernard Richards1 confirmed this as a view of the ruined keep Dudley Castle from the wooded slopes below (now occupied by Dudley Zoo), looking south-west to the spire of St Thomas’s Church. Inverted at the top right is Dudley Priory, continued from the similar prospect on folio 54 verso opposite (D22426).
There are variations on this view on folios 55 verso–56 recto and 56 verso (D22428–D22430). For other views of Dudley, see under folio 39 recto (D22395).
