The two sketches on this page are views of Dunbar harbour. The larger, lower sketch which continues faintly on the next page (folio 21; D13489) shows the ruins of Dunbar Castle with the quay in the foreground and the harbour at the left. The top sketch looks out to sea from the harbour with Bass Rock silhouetted against the horizon. There are four sketches of the harbour in the Bass Rock and Edinburgh sketchbook that were presumable made on the same occasion (Tate D13365–D13367, D13370; Turner Bequest CLXV 24–25, 26a).
