Here Turner has produced five squared-off sketches of the Meuse near Namur and at ‘Marche-les-Dames’, a village celebrated for its lofty limestone rocks. Two of the views are orientated in accordance with the foliation and the other three are orientated to landscape. The drawing at bottom right shows ‘children at play’ in the foreground and, in the middle distance, the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Vivier.1
