The viewpoint appears to Fore Street, Redruth, looking west to Carn Brea Castle on the skyline beyond the town. The clock tower on the left was replaced in 1828 and later heightened;1 an engraving of 1858 shows a similar view of the Cornish town.2 The view on the recto (D08779) possibly shows a mine or quarry in the area, and there is another view of the hill and castle in the contemporary Cornwall and Devon sketchbook (D41325; Turner Bequest CXXV a 46).
