This is the left half of a double-page spread continued to the right on folio 39 (D10940), opposite, recording the west range of Fountains Abbey. The panorama is continued further to the right on 39 verso (D10941). The observation of architectural detail here, particularly of the articulation of the west range of the cellarium, is very poor for Turner at this time. However, a similar view from further right drawn in much greater detail in the Devonshire Rivers, No.3, and Wharfedale sketchbook (Tate D09864; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 63) possibly dates from the same visit.
