This is the right half of a double-page spread continued from folio 38 verso (D10939), opposite, recording the view of the west range of Fountains Abbey. The panorama continues further to the right on the verso of the present leaf (D10941). See notes to D10939 for the uncharacteristically poor articulation of architectural detail in this spread, and for a more dtailed and possibly contemporary drawing taken from a position further right, in the Devonshire Rivers, No.3, and Wharfedale sketchbook (Tate D09864; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 63).
