The subject is continued on folio 172 recto opposite (D03246; Turner Bequest LVI 170); another view of Moffat is on folios 172 verso–173 recto (D03247–D03248; Turner Bequest LVI 170a–171).
Moffat is some thirty miles south-east of Hamilton (see folios 170 verso–171 recto; D03243–D03244; Turner Bequest LVI 168a–169), and there are no drawings recording Turner’s journey between the two, which must have taken him along the valley of the Clyde, past the Tinto Hills and through the ranges of Annandale and Eskdale. He was evidently now in a hurry to conclude his itinerary, though subsequent pages show him stopping to note some minor ruins on the road to Gretna Green.
