With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner much of this page with an outline study of the top-lit Grande Galerie of the Louvre. This is one of several studies of this gallery lighting system which the artist made on his visits to Paris; see Tate D24926 (Turner Bequest CCLX 90) and D24961 (Turner Bequest CCLX 125). Turner scholars have connected this interest in the Louvre design to the artist’s renovations to his own gallery back in London.1
