This view of Gylen Castle from the west belongs to a sequence of sketches that Turner made as he walked either towards or away from the ruin (folios 63 verso–67 verso; D26865–D26873). As this viewpoint does not differ greatly from Turner’s sketch on folio 66 (D26870) he did not need to draw it in very much detail here. Further away from the ruin more of the coast to the east and west came into view, so Turner took more time over his sketches, adding topographical details (folio 65; D26868).
