With the sketchbook turned to the right, this page contains two sketches of Hailes Castle in East Lothian near East Linton, identified by comparison with folio 24 verso (D25971; CCLXVII 24a). The top sketch is a view from the north-west, made from across the River Tyne, and at the bottom of the page is a rather rough sketch from the south-west. Turner would have been able to cross the river about 100 metres downstream by Hailes Mill (which is seen on folios 43 verso, 44 verso and 45; D25999, D26001, D26002; CCLXVII 43a, 44a, 45).
For more information about Turner’s visit to Hailes Castle in 1831 see folio 24 verso.
