The principal sketch shows the Lombardsbrücke (Lombard Bridge) and the Büsch monument (see Tate D30852; Turner Bequest CCCV 16a) in Hamburg, Germany. Turner rendered this view from a vantage point on the Alsterglacis. Seen in the distance at far left is the spire of St George’s Church (the Georgkirche), located in the Altstadt (Old Town) across the waters of the Aussenalster. At right are the spires of St James’ Church and St Peter’s located in the Old Town on the other side of Binnenalster Lake. The same view is repeated in the small detail at top right.
