These sketches show towns on the middle Rhine, to the north and south of Coblenz. The uppermost view depicts Hammerstein (inscribed ‘Hamm’) and the Burg Hammerstein overlooking it. The two views below are of Andernach (inscribed ‘Andernack’). Turner has inscribed the note ‘Belongs to X’ at right, with the corresponding ‘X’ inscribed at centre left on the Andernach waterfront. The Rhenish helm spires of St Mary’s Church are visible, as well as the Round Tower. The penultimate sketch shows the Rhine from Rhens (inscribed ‘Rintz’), looking towards Schloss Stolzenfels and the Martinsburg at Oberlahnstein (inscribed) at left (see Tate D29652, D29668, D29671; Turner Bequest CCXCVI 28a, 37, 28a). The sketch at rear shows the Marxburg (inscribed ‘Markburg’); see Tate D28521; Turner Bequest CCXC 83a.
