Turner had made a watercolour of Hampton Court in this aspect for his 1795 set (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester);1 its composition closely resembles that of this drawing. No study of the same view exists in the South Wales sketchbook (Tate; Turner Bequest XXVI), and it has been supposed that Turner took the Hereford Court book with him on his tour to South Wales in 1795, though this seems highly unlikely; see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
