This is the basis for two watercolours executed for Viscount Malden (untraced),1 and Sir Richard Colt Hoare (Yale Center for British Art, New Haven);2 see the list of ‘Order’d Drawings’ near the beginning of this sketchbook (D40557) and folio 49 recto (D00604; Turner Bequest XXVI 50). The first of the watercolours was engraved by John Walker for the Copper-Plate Magazine, 1 September 1797. Other views made at Hampton Court are on folios 48 recto, 51 recto and 52 recto (D00603, D00606, D00607; Turner Bequest XXVI 49, 52, 53).
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. There is a rapid sketch of battlements above the drawing at the top right.
