From a vantage point near the Hirshgasse on theNeuenheim side of the Neckar, Turner depicts Heidelberg Castle with the Palais Weimar on the riverbank below (see Tate D29845; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 16a). Heidelberg Castle’s northern and eastern façade are visible, including the ruined Great Tower at right, the Altan and Friedrichsbau and octagonal Bell Tower at left. The Zeughaus or arsenal can be seen below Bell Tower, and the Apothecary’s Tower behind it. To the left of the Castle is a terrace, from which Turner captured views like Tate D29827; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 7a.
