With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a drawing of hills punctuated by buildings, including a Gothic spire towards the bottom right-hand corner. The neighbouring pages of the volume are taken up with views of Le Havre, suggesting a location for these sketches in the uplands behind that harbour, perhaps close to the Abbey Church of Sainte-Honorine at Graville. For a comparison, see the engraving of the abbey after Turner’s design in the 1834 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate impression T04700.
