A very similar view is on folio 60 of the sketchbook (D06135). As Wilkinson notes of the present drawing, ‘this perhaps shows Turner’s house in Upper Mall – from the river. It certainly looks like Hammersmith.’ Two buildings appear to be marked with a cross, and one might be Turner’s. 6 West End, Upper Mall, which he used from autumn 1806 until late 1811, was a white house overlooking the Thames and with a garden extending to the water’s edge. It no longer stands.
