This is a view along a deep-cut river valley, continued to the right above to include a view of Ingleborough seen over an intervening limestone scar. The profile of Ingleborough suggests that the viewpoint is to the south-west of the summit, possibly looking up the valley of the river Doe. Two sketches of Ingleton and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire 4 book (Tate D11467, D11472; Turner Bequest CXLVII 16a, 19a) record a similar aspect, but from a greater distance. The present sketchbook also contains a detail study of Ingleborough from a similar aspect on folio 2 verso (D11045). The present sketch, drawn with the page turned horizontally, is upside-down in relation to the main sequence (see the sketchbook’s Introduction).
The present author has suggested that the location of the present sketch might be Crina Bottoms.1 Another sketch in the present book, folio 140 recto (D11277; Turner Bequest CXLV 139), records a similar subject, but appears to be taken from a still more westerly viewpoint, perhaps near Thornton Force. This sketch must have been made a little later than those of Crook of Lune amongst which it occurs. The author has dated Turner’s sketches in the Ingleton area to Saturday 10 August 1816.2
