Turner’s notes read: ‘Manchest[er]. Halifax. Bradford to Otley 8 ½ ... 9 ½ | 12 Huddersfield Morley Leeds 10 Otley 10 ½ Congleton’.
Turner gives two possible routes from Manchester to Otley, in anticipation of his first visit to Walter Fawkes at Farnley Hall just north-east of the town. Wilkinson remarks that Manchester is ‘not exactly on the way from London to Leeds’ but in fact Turner had previously been staying at Tabley, near Knutsford, with Sir John Leicester and thence had gone north to Lancashire, the Ribble Valley and the Craven Dales. He is unlikely to have taken either of the routes given here as the Tabley No.1 sketchbook (Tate D06830–D06857; D40065; D40720–D40721; Turner Bequest CIII) shows him at Whalley Bridge, Giggleswick and Malham.
