In addition to views of Naples and Paestum, this sketchbook contains a number of drawings scattered throughout the pages representing Turner’s return route from southern Italy in November 1819. The landscape sketch on this page represents a distant view of Itri, located amidst the Arunci mountains between Fondi and Mola di Gaeta. The vista depicts the silhouette of the town on the brow of a hill, seen from the road to the south-east as Turner would have approached it on his return journey towards Rome. The castle is in the centre whilst in the distance beyond is the peak of Monte Grande.
