The view is from the east side of the Dart Estuary, looking west to Dartmouth Castle, and south-west over the ruin of Kingswear Castle past Blackstone Point and Combe Point across Start Bay to Start Point, some ten miles away at almost the southern tip of Devon.
There is a small drawing from a similar angle on folio 55 verso opposite (D09738). This is one of a sequence of views around Dartmouth and the Dart Estuary between folios 50 recto and 60 recto (D09730, D09744); for sketches made in 1811, see under the first of these.
