For the views of Kirkstall Abbey including the bridge in this sketchbook, see note to folio 15 (D07272). Here the view is from the bridge itself, which as Hill observes is closest to one painted earlier by Thomas Girtin (Victoria and Albert Museum, London). Hill illustrates a photograph of his own of a similar view as it appears today.1
