In this series of roughly wrought sketches Turner depicts the ancient ruins of the Kloster Stuben, an Augustinian convent at Bremm. Built in honour of St Nicholas, construction began in around 1137 within the grounds of an earlier monastery.1 At one time the Kloster housed plunder from the Fourth Crusade (1202–4): a piece of the Holy Cross, brought back to Germany by the knight Heinrich von Elm.2 In the late eighteenth century it was converted into a secular convent and finally, in the 1820s, the site was auctioned off for demolition, lying in ruin ever since.3 For other drawings of the Kloster, see Tate D19782, D20165, D20172, D28374, D28375; Turner Bequest CCXVI 116, CCXIX 4, 11, CCXC 12a, 13.
Turner makes note of a ‘Red R[ock]’ in the uppermost sketch at left and the atmospheric ‘Effect of [a] Pink Sunset’ over the ruined Kloster Stuben at rear.
