The subject of the sketches on this page are not conclusively identified but they appear to depict one of the volcanic lakes in the Campi Flegrei region (Phlegraean or Burning Fields), probably either Lake Avernus or Lake Agnano. A small part of one of the studies has spilled over from the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 78 verso (D15710; Turner Bequest CLXXXIV 76a).
