Joseph Mallord William Turner ?Lake Maggiore 1819

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 32 Recto:
?Lake Maggiore 1819
Turner Bequest CXCIV 32
Pencil and grey watercolour wash on white wove paper, 121 x 195 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘32’ top right, ascending right-hand edge
Stamped in black ‘CXCIV 32’ top right, ascending right-hand edge
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The subject of this sketch is very faint and almost impossible to discern owing to the dark and uneven nature of the grey background wash. However, the pencil details at the top of the sheet appear to depict a rocky or hilly shoreline with a castle dominating the right-hand side, possibly representing a view on Lake Maggiore.
