Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 16 Verso:
Landscape with a Town 1818
Turner Bequest CLXVI 16a
Pencil on white wove paper, 90 x 112 mm
Inscribed in pencil by Turner ?‘[...]’ centre
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This slight sketch shows a town a wide and hilly landscape or on the coast. The sketch is inscribed, but illegibly. The style is typical of some views in the 1818 Scottish sketchbooks of Edinburgh (such as Tate D13401; Turner Bequest CLXV 45 in the Bass Rock and Edinburgh sketchbook), although there are no topographical or architectural features that confirm this suggestion. Another possibility is North of South Shields, which are depicted in sketches nearby (see folio 13; D13473). The drawing continues slightly on folio 17 (D13481).
