Joseph Mallord William Turner Landscape with Cader Idris c.1798-9

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 49 Verso:
Landscape with Cader Idris c.1798–9
D01873
Turner Bequest XLIII 48a
Watercolour and white chalk on blue laid paper prepared with a red-brown ground, 140 x 216 mm
Stamped in black ‘XLIII – 48a’ bottom right, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Made with the page turned horizontally, this and the study of an almost identical subject on folio 50 verso (D01875; Turner Bequest XLIII 49a) are probably related to the two large watercolours of Cader Idris (both currently untraced);1 see also Tate D04187 (Turner Bequest LXX j). A drawing in the 1798 Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate D01352; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 98) seems to be of the same mountain.
