Joseph Mallord William Turner Landscape with Houses and a Road c.1824

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Landscape with Houses and a Road c.1824
Turner Bequest CCXXIV 220
Pencil on blue wove paper, 282 x 192 mm
Stamped in black ‘CCXXIV 220’ bottom left, descending vertically
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
The faintness of this sketch renders the subject difficult to read. There are possibly two views depicted here: one towards the top of the sheet, which appears to describe trees and houses in a landscape and one in the middle, which includes a road and some trees.
There is a sketch of an unrelated subject on the verso (D40414).
For the grouping and dating of these works, see the section Introduction.
Technical notes:
This sketch appears on one half of a large sheet bisected by the faint line of a fold; this half measures 145 x 192mm. Water damage has occurred, likely as a result of the 1928 Tate Gallery flood, causing discoloration on the right edge of the sheet.
