The identification of Lewes is correctly given by Edward Croft-Murray in pencil annotations to a copy of Finberg now in Tate’s Library. Here, and on folio 36 of the sketchbook (D05653) Turner shows the Ouse passing below the town and castle. The river was navigable and used commercially; a boat is seen at centre.
