This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
The Turner scholar David Hill identified this study as a view up Italy’s Val d’Aosta towards Ussel, Chatillon and Cly; he demonstrated that Turner’s vantage point was from below Saint-Vincent.1 The fourteenth-century castle of Ussel is seen on the left, while the castle of Cly is seen in the centre distance.2
For other studies made on loose sheets related to Turner’s visit to the town of Chatillon in the lower Aosta valley, see D34889 and D34906 (Turner Bequest CCCXLIV 395 and 412). Turner also made various studies from, and of, the town in his sketchbooks (Tate D29221, D29268, D29269, D29276, D29313, D29314, and D41206; Turner Bequest CCXCIV 5, 30, 30 a, 35 a, 54 a, and 55).
