The sketch of trees at the right of the page is the continuation of a view of a mansion above a river on folio 19 verso (Tate D18554; Turner Bequest CCXI 19a). The same building is depicted in the small sketch at the centre of the page; see also folio 17 verso (Tate D18550; Turner Bequest CCCXI 17a).
Ian Warrell has identified Turner’s inscription at the right of the page (see above) as relating to the first set in a series of lithographic prints entitled Voyages pittoresque et romantiques dans l’ancienne France, published in 1821 by Isadore Taylor (1789–1879) and Charles Nodier (1780–1844), which was dedicated to Normandy. Turner may have become acquainted with Nodier and the artists Jean-Baptiste Isabey and Eugène Isabay when they visited London in 1821, or they may have met during Turner’s tour of France that year. The inscription ‘Normandy W[ork]’ also appears on folio 10 verso (Tate D18541; Turner Bequest CCXI 10v), and there are notes on lithography on folio 22 (Tate D18558; Turner Bequest CCXI 22).1
