The view is north-west over Margate’s Great Beach, with the stone pier on the left and steamers at the end of Jarvis’s Landing place at the right. A jumble of coaches, houses and figures on the sands is silhouetted by the haloed evening light of the summer sun, with beached boats loosely indicated in red to their left. For more on the Margate setting, see the Introduction to this subsection.
Technical notes:
Turner’s use of this sheet of buff paper is unusual among the identified Margate views grouped here, although several others are on blue paper. Compare one other sheet of similar size and colour (Tate D34160–D24161; Turner Bequest CCCXLI 427, 427v), with Margate views on both sides.
