These slight and summary jottings represent various monuments in Mayen: the Genovevaburg at centre, the twisted spire of St Clement’s Church, and the gated and towered bridge, the Brückentor. Part of the sketch of the Genovevaburg extends onto folio 44 recto (Tate D28437; Turner Bequest CCXC 44). Turner has inscribed the page ‘Mayen’.
This sketch and those on Tate D28434, D28435; Turner Bequest CCXC 42a, 43 provided Turner with the information to produce a striking scene of the Genovevaburg and Mayen at sunset (Tate D20254; Turner Bequest CCXXI U).
