When Turner returned to Newport after his tour of the island he probably had time while waiting for the boat back to Southampton to draw in the town, an activity he seems to have postponed when he first arrived. This is the view of the town seen by the visitor arriving along the Medina, navigable to this point, from Cowes. Carisbrooke Castle is visible in the distance.
The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally.

Blank; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
