Drawn with the page turned horizontally, this records the view from higher ground immediately east of Grange-over-Sands, looking north to east-north-east with Lindale and Newton Fell to the left, and Whitbarrow Scar in the distance towards the right and continued to the right above to include the view over the Kent Estuary to Milnthorpe. Turner sketched similar material from a viewpoint at the other side of Newton Fell, closer to Witherslack and Whitbarrow Scar, in the Yorkshire 4 sketchbook (Tate D11504; Turner Bequest CXLVII 38). The present author has dated Turner’s sketches in this area to Monday 5 August 1816.1
