This view of North Shields from the east must have been made either from a boat, or from across the Tyne in South Shields. We look towards the Fish Quay with the town’s three harbour lights, which are, from left to right: the 1802 High Light and Low Light, and an older decommissioned beacon.
There are two similar views (though both from a slightly more northerly position) on folios 10 and 13 (D13467; D13473). For information on Turner’s visit to North and South Shields and further references see folio 13.
