This study relates to Turner’s 1836 tour of the Alps, which he made in the company of the wealthy Scottish landowner H.A.J. Munro of Novar; for more information, see the Introduction to this section.
This is one of two colour studies the Turner scholar David Hill has identified as showing the monks of St Bernard in Pre-Saint-Didier: for more information and the other study, see the entry for Tate D36267 (Turner Bequest CCCLXIV 399). In the present view, two further figures are shown kneeling before the monks.
