Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 89 Verso:
Richmond Hill circa 1816–19
Turner Bequest CXL 81a
Pencil on white wove paper, 155 x 95 mm
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This drawing, with hatched shading, is more a composition study than a sketch from nature. The trees and building on the left are also sketched on the facing folio 90 (D10572; Turner Bequest CXL 82). Butlin and Joll cite this drawing along with others running to folio 90 (D10572; Turner Bequest CXL 82) as similar in general terms to the composition of England: Richmond Hill, on the Prince Regent’s Birthday (Tate N00502)1 exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819.
