This sketch revisits a subject first sketched in 1797 (Tate D01098; Turner Bequest XXXVI D). The comparison shows much greater perceptual dynamism in the present sketch; see also comments on folio 9 recto (D11383). A similar view, but from the downstream side of the bridge, was taken by Jean-Baptiste Chatelain about 1745 (York City Art Gallery).
