Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 15 Recto:
River Seine from a High Vantage ?1832
Turner Bequest CCLII 15
Pencil on white wove paper, 187 x 114 mm
Partial watermark ‘YMAN | 28’
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘15’ top right running vertically
Stamped in black ‘CCLII – 15’ top right running vertically
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the sketchbook turned vertically, Turner worked multiple small views of the Seine seen from a high vantage onto this page. In each drawing, the wide meandering of the river is clearly depicted, although the scratchy passages indicative of buildings in the middle distance are too cursory to suggest a definite location.
