Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this one of the long sequence of sketches taken on the Yorkshire coast between Scarborough and Whitby, between folios 83 verso and 98 verso (D02746–D02776). It is a rapid note that nevertheless conveys with great energy the essential elements of the subject; compare folios 90 verso–91 recto and 91 verso–92 recto (D02760–D02763).
