With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the central strip of this page with a study of a rusticated gateway with gabled buildings beyond. The drawing it too brief to suggest a location, although this volume contains numerous sketches taken in the settlements surrounding Paris and around the River Marne to the east of the city. For comparison, a list of these drawings is provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
