This drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. There are numerous studies of shipping in pen and brown ink with wash in the contemporary Studies for Pictures book, for example Tate D04134 and D04143 (Turner Bequest LXIX 117, 126). Some may be related to marine paintings on which Turner was working at this date.
