With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a drawing of a riverside landscape with a bridge viewed through the narrow trunks of saplings. Turner’s inscription towards the bottom left-hand corner of the page locates the scene at Saint-Cloud, some seven miles west of central Paris on the banks of the Seine. A list of pages in the present volume featuring Saint-Cloud is provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
