With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner worked this page with drawings of the palace and surroundings of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, situated some twelve miles west of central Paris. The sketch along the bottom of the page is inverted in relation to the one above. This location is given away by the palace garden’s sloping terraces included here in the lower right-hand quadrant of the page. This site features on multiple pages of this volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction. An engraving of the palace subsequently featured in the 1835 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate T04714.
